Long Engineering's history

J. Ellen Long, PE, LEED AP founded Long Engineering, Inc. in 1997 with a vision to build an exceptional civil engineering firm dedicated to providing quality, value-based services throughout the Southeast.  Initially, the spring board for her firm was the invitation from Chick-fil-A to be their in-house consultant focused on the hiring of regional engineers, their training, establishing design standards and providing quality control/value engineering for their national expansion program.

In 1999, she expanded her firm to provide Land Development and Water Resources services for private and public clients throughout the southeast.  In 2002, she added Land Surveying, Traffic and Transportation and Aviation Infrastructure Services that produced a truly multi-disciplinary civil engineering and surveying firm.  In 2012, Bridge Design and Construction Engineering and Inspection was added to round out the firm’s offerings.

Additionally, Long Engineering, Inc. has completed over 30 highly sustainable building projects following the guidelines of EarthCraft, Earthcraft Coastal Communities and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).  An established reputation in developing innovative, sustainable design solutions that address the environmental impact has allowed Long Engineering, Inc. to complete three LEED (NC) Platinum Certified projects, seven LEED (NC) Gold Certified projects and eleven other LEED Silver and Certified projects.  Long Engineering, Inc. also completed one of the first LEED for Neighborhood Development projects in the southeast.

Long Engineering, Inc. was named by Zweig White as a ‘Hot Firm’ (fastest growing A/E/P firms in the U.S.) in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2015.  They have been awarded the ACEC Georgia 2007 Grand Award Small Project for the highly innovative Sweetwater Creek State Park Visitor Center (20th LEED Platinum Certified project in the world) and the ACEC-Georgia 2010 Engineering Excellence Grand Award for our participation on the John Creek Environmental Campus project, a $143 million water reclamation facility in Roswell, Georgia, that has won numerous regional and national awards.

Long Engineering, Inc. is also a Female Business Enterprise (FBE), certified by the City of Atlanta, Fulton County, DeKalb County, and the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, the largest third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women in the United States.  We are also certified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) with the Georgia Department of Transportation.  With offices in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, Long Engineering, Inc. serves the southeastern United States.
